Drs Angela Riganti & Bruce Groenewald – Mineralogical (and other) adventures in the Land of Fire and Ice
Iceland is a small country island located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Arctic Circle, and thus famous for the stunning contrast of fiery volcanoes and glittering glaciers – hence its moniker as the Land of Fire and Ice.
Tourists flock to the island to enjoy its spectacular landscape, enticing geology, and stunning auroras, but Iceland is certainly not a destination that springs to mind for its mineralogical richness…but for the committed traveller and collector, there are actually a few hidden mineralogical “gems” to discover. This talk will introduce the unique geology of the island and its striking landscape, and our search (and finds) for its elusive minerals during a northern summer trip there in 2024.
Bruce and Angela are geologists on the brink of retirement who like to include geotourism destinations as part of their travels and to enjoy different aspects of geology from those they have ‘lived’ in their journeys from Italy (Angela) and South Africa / Antarctica (Bruce) to Namibia and Western Australia.
