The Geology and Mineralogy of Whim Creek, Pilbara

Abstract

The Whim Creek copper-zinc deposit is located approximately 120 km southwest of Port Headland, in the central Pilbara region of Western Australia. This volcanogenic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposit is hosted by volcaniclastic and sedimentary rocks of Archean age that are not only prospective for copper and zinc, but also for gold. Wendy Beets (Exploration Manager for Anax Metals Ltd, the current tenement holder) will introduce the geology of the Whim Creek area and deposits. Manfred Mertinat will illustrate the history of prospecting and mining in the area and illustrate the significance of some of the most renown minerals found here – including the famed mimetite Whim Creek is best known for by mineral collectors!
